I want to take you inside a coaching call I recently had with an amazing client. She said, “it’s odd to indulge and still be losing weight.” Part of my job as a coach is to pull out what is really going on behind the words we say. What are the stories behind our thoughts, our precepts, our views of the world and our experiences. I thought it was so insightful this client was able to recognize this thought she was having. And she brought up a really good point.
And before we jump in, if you’re new around here, hi! I’m Marla. A women’s health coach in St. George, Utah and serving women all over. I help women with weight loss and help them keep it off!
Diet culture has had an effect on all of us. Today I would like to invite you to shift a concept that is false. That is the idea that to lose weight you have to suffer. You have to be rigid. You have to avoid certain foods. Losing weight definitely takes work. But it doesn’t mean you have to suffer and it doesn’t mean you have to avoid ANY food. The truth is you can lose weight and enjoy all food; the portion size is what matters most. When you can grasp and then live this concept, you will lose weight AND keep it off.
For Mother’s Day the church I belong to passed out these darling bundtlet cakes to all the women over the age of 18. I got a yummy white chocolate and raspberry one. I am currently living my best life at maintenance, which means I’m not trying to lose weight and I don’t want to gain any weight. I wanted information on this sweet little bundtlet because I had a suspicion it was packed with calories. I looked it up and the nutrition information said it was 310 calories. I was pumped about that, but then I looked at it and that seemed off. Looking more closely, I realized the entire bundlet was actually 2 servings, so if I ate the entire thing–I was consuming 620 calories. I totally could have done that, but I would’ve been swapping out an entire meal for this bundlet and it wasn’t worth it for me. Instead, I ate half of it. It was super yummy. I enjoyed it. And I’m over here not gaining any weight.
If I would’ve told myself I couldn’t or shouldn’t have the sweet treat, chances are I would’ve ended up eating the entire thing. Restricting never works long term. It is a terrible strategy. Instead, remember the importance of portion size. Have what you want–just less of it. As my clients try this out, they realize they actually don’t even want as much as they think they do. This is food freedom.
